Payment Systems

Operator-specific payment systems
With the arrival of advanced operator portals such as KPN's i-mode portal and Vodafone live, new operator-specific content payment systems are being introduced. These payment systems are technically supported in the Mbasics platform, and can be managed and configured similar to other integrated services.
The revenue payment contract is usually closed directly between the operator and the content provider (see figure). Alternatively, in case Mbasics maintains a generic revenue sharing agreement with the operator, the content provider can be paid through Mbasics.

Operator-independent payment systems
These systems utilise premium rate phone numbers. As nearly all operators support premium numbers, this payment solution can be applied nationwide in most countries with no individual operator contracts needed. Countries currently served are the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and France.
Content can be charged both on subscription base and on event base.
The content provider can specify all of the following online:

  • The tariff of the premium call, ranging from 0,35 to 1,24 EUR per call or approximately 0,75 to 3 GBP per call in the UK.
  • The subscription time period, which typically ranges from 1/10 hour to 14 days or more.
  • The price to be paid by the consumer for ‘events’, which can be pageviews, sending SMS, receiving ringtones etc. The price for each event can be individually specified, and can range from a fraction of the local currency to the full tariff of the premium call.
Depending on preference and on expected premium calling traffic, the content provider can select either dedicated or collectively used premium phone numbers.
