Publishing
Currently there are three major mobile internet standards in the market: i-mode, WAP and Pocket PC. These standards are each built on their own markup language, of which often multiple versions are simultaneously available.
For each standard, a fast growing diversity of mobile internet devices is being released. Devices have different screen sizes, different browser types and versions, and in general different ways of handling mobile content and functionality.
Further, telecom operators tend to impose specific requirements on the formats of mobile services that are published in their consumer portals. These specifications may be functional, such as prescribed navigation links and payment systems, as well as cosmetical.
The Mbasics platform serves content owners with an integrated solution to publish and exploit premium content across the variety of wireless standards, devices and operator portals. This platform is available here and now, and is accessible from this website. The enclosed tools are easy to use and allow for the creation and maintenance of mobile services on the highest level, providing a complete package for mobile internet publishing.
Mobile publishing in compliance with:
Content Management
Site management
Mobile sites built on the Mbasics platform are organised as a directory or 'tree' structure, similar as in a file manager. The elements which make up the mobile site can be edited and rearranged throughout the site by means of a JavaTM-based online editor. (See figure below.)
The site elements symbolise the platform services, such as email/SMS messaging, consumer payments etc. All platform services can be configured online. For example, an SMS messaging service can be configured by entering a fixed text block in messages that are sent from the mobile site.
Links within the mobile site, including cross-links between branches of the site tree, are automatically managed so that no internal dead links can be created. With a push of the ‘save’ button the site is uploaded to the Mbasics servers and immediately operational.
Image management
In order to fit the whole spectrum of mobile devices, images require special processing. This is performed by an advanced image control system which allows to upload images of standard gif, bmp and jpg/jpeg formats, while their appearance in mobile displays can be accurately defined. Images are visualised in an 'image store' for convenient online manipulation.
Based on browser detection, the pre-defined images are dynamically scaled and further processed to comply with the individual handsets to which they are published.
In addition to this, images can be optimised for five categories of devices of which the screens have similar form factors. This allows for instance to serve a small-screen phone with only a cut of the full picture, or to suit landscape and portrait displays with tuned variants of the same image.
